Camden County Board of Education Hires New Superintendent The Camden County Board of Education is excited to announce the selection and election of Dr. Linda Carr as the next superintendent of the Camden County Schools (CCS).  The board thoughtfully and carefully reviewed applications from a diverse field of twelve excellent candidates from two different states and one territory. Although many qualified candidates applied, the board felt that Dr. Carr's experience, leadership, and dedication to students and staff would best serve CCS students, employees, and the community for years to come. The board is confident Dr. Carr will lead the school system to even higher achievement.  Dr. Carr has enjoyed a long and very successful career in public education, spanning nearly thirty years in North Carolina. Since 2020, she has served as superintendent of the Washington County Schools (WCS), where she recently helped the school system obtain a $50 million needs-based grant for constructing a new consolidated PK-12 campus. Prior to joining WCS, Dr. Carr served as an assistant superintendent for instructional services and the federal programs director for the Sampson County Schools. She also spent six years as the principal of Sampson County's Union Elementary School and was named the school system's Principal of the Year in 2014-15. In 2005, Dr. Carr helped open Sampson Early College High School, one of the first nine early colleges in North Carolina, and served as principal there until 2011. Dr. Carr also worked as an assistant principal in Wayne County Schools, and she began her education career in Clinton City Schools as a dance and theater arts teacher.  Dr. Carr has an impressive academic background as well. She earned her doctorate in educational leadership from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2000. She also received a master's degree in drama from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a bachelor's degree in theatre arts, K-12, from Lees-McRae College. Dr. Carr has successfully completed the NCASA Next Generation Superintendent, AASA National Superintendent Certification, NCPAPA's Distinguished Leaders of Practice, and the NC Rural Centers Homegrown Leaders programs.  Dr. Carr participated in a collaborative program, under the leadership of Dr. Kathy Spencer and the Panasonic foundation, entitled FORCE (Focusing on Rural Challenges in Education), this multi-county consortium is committed to equity and excellence in student achievement across four participating rural districts in North Carolina. She has presented nationally as a member of FORCE on rural challenges in education and most recently with a panel at the National Conference on Education with AASA on Empowering School Communities through Social Media. She is a member of the North Carolina Association of Administrators, the North Carolina Association of Compensatory Educators, the National Association of Federal Program Administrators, and the North Carolina Association of Educational Office Professionals. Dr. Carr is married to Ed Carr, and together they have two children, a son, James who is currently attending ECU, and a daughter, Jewell who currently attends Washington County Early College High School.  Dr. Carr looks forward to the opportunity to lead the Camden County Schools and become an active community member. Dr. Carr said, "I am excited to serve and look forward to continuing the excellence in Camden County. My passion for public education is to remain a student-focused leader. I am committed to serving my community and strive to be a positive educator sharing successes and searching for new partnerships to enhance options and opportunities for our youth."  Please join the board in congratulating and welcoming Dr. Linda Jewell Carr as the new superintendent of the Camden County Schools.

March 22, 2023 the Camden Middle 8th Band and Camden High School Band traveled to Riverside for the NC Music Performance Assessment. This is our end of course test. The event is sanctioned by the NC Bandmasters Association and is a measurement tool to assess our students' knowledge of the NC Standard Course of Study for Instrumental Music. In the band world we consider this the most important musical performance of our school year! Each group prepared 3 pieces of music for the stage performance. In addition each group is given a piece of music they have never seen before and asked to perform it for a judge after a brief 5 minute preparation session. Both ensembles received a Superior Rating on stage and in Sight Reading an overall rating of Superior. NEVER in school history have both groups received a superior in the same year and this is the 2nd Superior in a row for the high school. To really understand the significance of these accomplishments, I think it's critical to note that the 8th band was formerly the 6th grade band that began learning their instruments via zoom. The majority of the high school band is made up of students who also spent the bulk of their middle school and early high school band experience behind a computer screen. In an educational environment where we are talking about learning loss from Covid and measuring growth, I don't think there's a better example of growth the band students could demonstrate. Rose and I really do not like to "toot our own horns" but this major success and milestone for the county's band program was just too big to not share with everyone! Sincerely Chris Whitehurst Director of Bands-CCHS
